Para Commandos raid Chachro town in Sind |
Dec 07, Rajasthan: Elite Commando troops of the Parachute regiment today conducted a raid on the enemy town of Chachro deep inside enemy lines and destroyed installations and captured a huge number of prisoners and equipment before they came back safely to Indian territory. This raid was undertaken by the 10 Para Commando Battallion under the command of Lt Col His Highness Sawai Bhawani Singh of Jaipur. The Unit was based at Sarupkatala, south west of Barmer town and on the outbreak of hostilities infilitrated across to Pakistani lines on the night of December 5th. The force was divided into two groups each supposed to raid Umarkot and Chachro towns. but the plan was changed at the last moment to attack only Chachro town. Each force was mounted on Jonga 4X4 Jeeps heavily equipped with MMGs and packed with supplies. |
Both the forces had to hide at a designated areas during daytime yesterday to evade aerial survielance. After meeting up yesterday night, The Commandos prepared for the raid which was scheduled to start in the early hours of today. The attack on Chachro started at 3.00 am today morning, A Group led by the Maj G K Sanan and B Group led by Maj B D Dogra, MVC. |
The raiding party came under fire on reaching the outskirts of Chachro ,but by daylight the Commandos neutralised all the threats and cleared the enemy from Chachro. It was discovered that a Major chunck of the enemy force had escaped earlier. However 17 Prisoners and a huge number of small arms were captured. As the day progressed, One of the C Group returned to base along with the Prisoners. A Group proceded to raid the town of Virawah. The move was undertaken in broad daylight in the desert. Not much opposition was encountered at Virawah. A solitary LMG post that opened fire was dealt with accordingly. was cleared by evening. The work done, the Commandos have exfilitrated back to Indian territory via the Indian town of Bhakhasar. Here they came under fire by the lone Indian BSF Post. However the confusion was sorted out. The raid signifies the first time Indian Commandos carried out sucessful raids behind Pakistani Lines. |
