Map of East Pakistan showing Indian Army's gains till the evening of December 5. Indian Troops have made major gains in the Tripura Sector. Dacca has been bombed by the Indian Air Force , while Chittagong and Cox Bazar has been the target for Naval aircraft flying from INS Vikrant.

Further east, in the IV Corps sector , Indian troops have suceeded in occupying the town of Akhaura after a fierce fight that raged for more than three days. Troops of 18 Rajput and 4 Guards delieverd the final coup-de-grace to the enemy. While it was expected for the Brigade mounting the attack to proceed south after the capture of Akhaura, a chance discovery led the Brigade to go Northwest in the direction of Brahmanbaria.

The Bridge over the Titas river which leads to Brahmanbaria - Ashuganj was found intact and the brigade used it to get its troops advancing on that axis.

The town of Mudafarganj was occupied by troops of 301 Brigade. A Jeep Convoy approaching the town today morning was ambushed. From the documents captured in the lead jeep, it was revealed that the occupants of the rear jeep who escaped were none other than the senior commander of the enemy forces facing our troops!

Though most of the gains in the last two days are relatively minor towns and cities, the stage is now set for the capture of some major objectives like Jhenida, Jessore, Ashuganj, Pirganj , Sylhet etc.
